MARTIN KAY’S FORAGE (album launch)

Martin Kay – alto sax/clarinet/composition
Andrew Saragossi – tenor sax/alto clarinet
Brodie Mcallister – trombone
Sophie Min – piano
Helen Svoboda – double bass
Zac Sakrewski – double bass/effects
Benjamin Shanoon – drums

Martin Kay, composer, improviser and saxophonist, leads this troupe of the most fantastical musicians. It is rare you will hear such a heady brew, such herby goodness. As a forager, I love this uncategorised biodiversity. The foundation of the sound is two double basses – a two-tree process – with drums and piano and a tractor of alto sax, tenor sax, trombone. Visceral rhythmic jigsaws and sonic baths shift matter, swirling molecules. The musicians take to the structures with hoses, secateurs, chainsaws and dabs of cotton wool. With great care the manicured lawn becomes unkempt. Between Messiaen’s tone-hoes and emergent free gardening, epic topiaries of form are shaped, inspired by wonderful garden pets such as the Fugu, Ligeti’s Goat, Thrice Mice, and our vagrants at the end of the row: Pedestrians of Steel.

Theo Carbo – guitar
Merinda Dias-Jayasinha – voice

In their newly formed duo project, the pair explore their original compositions and musical partnership. Both two-time finalists in the Generations In Jazz scholarships, Theo and Merinda are cementing their place in Australia’s new generation of jazz musicians.

Theo Carbo is a young improvising guitarist from Melbourne. He began playing at the age of 7 and now, at 18, performs regularly with many of Australia’s most renowned jazz musicians. Some of Theo’s career highlights have been performing with Nadje Noordhuis at the Wangarratta Jazz Festival, Barney McCall’s ASIO band, Andrea Keller and Gian Slater.

Vocalist and composer Merinda Dias-Jayasinha, is happiest when she is singing, and plays with a range of wonderful musicians, including John Hoffman, Steve Newcomb, and her contemporaries in her hometown of Brisbane. She has performed at the Brisbane and Melbourne International Jazz Festivals, the Magnetic Island Jazz Festival, as well as the Brisbane Jazz Club, JMI Live, and Bennetts Lane Jazz Club (MEL).

This event will feature one set of music from each group as well as interstitial music from GCR DJ’s.
