SuperSonic #7: Place

Zac Sakrewski (album launch) // Toby Wren

SuperSonic presents a new concert series focusing on new and original music in the Brisbane jazz/improvised/experimental community. For our seventh show we will be unveiling the new album ’75-93′ from Brisbane bassist Zac Sakrewski, as well as featuring guitarist Toby Wren presenting a special solo set.

Sunday September 9th // Black Bear Lodge
Doors at 5:30pm // Bands from 6pm

Zac Sakrewski is an improviser, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator from the Sunshine Coast, currently lending his distinctive sound to many original music acts, from jazz and free improvisation to music therapy and metal. With his strong desire to experiment and a love of electro-acoustics, Zac has developed a unique playing style, taking the traditional techniques of the Double Bass and using effect pedals to create soundscapes, completely contrary to what a listener would expect.

Zac has been fortunate to work with some of the most talented artists and ensembles throughout Australia, including Yitzhak Yedid, Julian Arguelles and Kristin Berardi. Currently, Zac spends his time playing in many varied ensembles, including Prog-Jazz Trio Milton Man Gogh, Kayleigh Pincott’s quintet, Faux Bandit, Found in Trees just to name a few.

Among this, Zac has recorded his first solo album “75-93”, a sonic exploration of his upbringing on a small cattle property. Taking influence from Bluegrass, Jazz and Folk, Zac pulls at familiar threads of home, a naive sense of nostalgia, as well as coming back with the reality of maturity on your shoulders.

“75-93 is a musical snapshot of a place that formed my personal approaches to everything, as a home naturally will. I tried my best to produce something that resonates with the location; vibrant and sparse, full of life yet remarkably lonely, the smell of grass and eucalyptus while you spectacularly stack it on a gravel road and the tumultuous journey of growth within that” – Zac.

Toby Wren is an Australian guitarist and composer who has released six albums of original compositions and collaborated with leading jazz and classical performers. Toby teaches jazz guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium, and has several compositions in the Australian Jazz Real Book.

In this special solo set, Toby will be performing a mix of contemporary jazz and classical works, including some premiere original compositions, and a collaboration with a special guest.

This event will feature one set of music from each group as well as interstitial music from GCR DJ’s.
